An introduction to hand-setting type and letterpress printing. You will learn the basics of composing type by hand, and how to use some of the brilliant old presses in our printshop.

Workshops are designed for people with little or no experience. We keep them small so you have lots of support to learn and produce your own designs.

Workshops run from 10am to 5pm. Please bring a packed lunch to enjoy in the Chocolate Factory space adjacent to the print room.

Two-day letterpress workshops

Thursday 13 and Friday 14 March 2024, 10am to 5pm, £260

Day one will give you an introduction to hand-setting type, letterpress printing and give you an understanding of the history and language of the craft. You will learn the basics of composing type by hand, and how to use the presses including how to mix ink and register a two-colour print. On the second day, you will be able to develop, typeset and print your own work.

Changes and cancellations
If you are unable to attend a workshop, we will do our best to find you a space on an alternative date that suits you. We’re sorry but we generally do not offer refunds.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need experience?
No, the workshops are designed for beginners as well as folk who have a little experience (from art college days, for example).

What about food?
We are ask you to bring your own lunch. There is a space adjacent to the printroom where everyone can eat together and there are facilities to make a hot drink. St Nicks market is close by and a good option for lunch outside.

Are there toilet facilities?
Yes, there are two toilets just outside the printshop.

Are there any accessibility restrictions?
There are two steps from the lane into the building. The workshop and toilet facilities are on the ground floor and are accessible for people who use a wheelchair. Please contact us and tell us about any specific requirements you have.

What if I have to cancel?
If you are unable to attend a workshop, we will do our best to find you a space on an alternative date that suits you. We’re sorry but we generally do not offer refunds.

Covid
If you have any symptoms of Covid or believe you may be infectious, please do not attend the workshop.
